Emergent.TV
(2015)

Final project for The Future of News and Participatory Media, Emergent TV explored how Internet platforms would transform TV news production and distribution. The Technology and Economics of Online Video Recommendation

(2015)

MIT Sloan thesis project exploring the interaction between Internet video recommendation technologies and post-linear digital media economics. The thesis focused on the tendancy of these systems - amidst digital abundance - to produce Blockbuster effects (economically) and echo chambers (socially). It then proposed alternative systems - built on micropayments and Long Tail discovery mechanisms - that would enable a wider diversity of video to emerge. Ultimately the work was not published due to full time work pressures and the additional tuition costs needed. However, post 2016, with the centrality and complexity of this issue now in focus, I am revisiting the work on my free time.

ABOUT ME

I enjoy exploring old film techniques, cameras, and lenses, and am part of the National Ski Patrol (NSP) as a patroller at Mount Baldy. Beyond that I keep up to date with ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ of content recommendation technology, and spend most of my free time herding life with Jasna & Looper @looperpup - serenaded by barks and beautiful music.

I am Director of Stratey at OTOY Inc and OTOY‘s RNDR Network - a blockchain GPU compute and 3D marketplace for holographic media. I am an MIT Sloan MBA ‘15 (Entrepreneurship and Innovation) focusing on emerging media technology and information economics. Previously I worked at IMAX Labs; Open Source with Christopher Lydon; and was a documentary film director and prodcuer with The Global Media Project at Brown University’s Watson Institute (AB History ‘08).
